Ozempic and GLP-1 Hair Loss: Why It Happens and What Helps

Hand holding a comb with hair that has fallen out

Does Ozempic cause hair loss? Hair loss has been reported with GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound). In the Wegovy trials, about 3% of people reported hair loss compared with 1% on placebo. It's most likely caused by rapid weight loss and lower food intake, not the drug itself, and it is usually temporary.

Why does hair fall out on GLP-1 medications?

The most likely reason is a type of shedding called telogen effluvium. When your body goes through a big change, such as fast weight loss, a sharp drop in calories or a stressful event, more hairs than usual switch into their resting phase at the same time. A few months later, they fall out together.

On GLP-1s, a few things can add up:

  • Fast weight loss, which is a stress on the body.
  • Eating much less, and often less protein.
  • Lower intake of iron, zinc and other nutrients hair needs.

When does GLP-1 hair loss start, and does it grow back?

Telogen effluvium usually shows up 2 to 4 months after the trigger. For most people, the shedding slows within about 6 months, and hair grows back over the following months once weight and eating settle. Regrowth is slow, since hair grows about half an inch a month.

If your hair is thinning in patches, your part is widening, or the shedding lasts longer than 6 months, see a dermatologist. Other causes, such as thyroid problems or genetic hair loss, can look similar.

How to take GROW Hair Gummies

How can you support your hair on Ozempic or Wegovy?

  1. Prioritize protein. Hair is made of a protein called keratin. Aim for protein at every meal, and ask your prescriber or a dietitian what daily target is right for you.
  2. Don't skip meals entirely. Small, nutrient-dense meals are better than one tiny meal a day.
  3. Ask for labs. Ask your prescriber to check iron (ferritin), vitamin D, zinc and thyroid levels. Low levels are common and easy to fix.
  4. Be gentle with your hair. Avoid tight styles and lots of heat while it recovers.
  5. Care for your scalp. A calm, hydrated scalp is the best place for new hair to grow.

Should you take biotin for GLP-1 hair loss?

Probably not, unless you're deficient. Biotin deficiency is rare, and high-dose biotin can interfere with some lab tests, including thyroid and heart tests, which the FDA has warned about. That matters when you're on a medication that needs regular check-ups.

That's one reason our GROW Astaxanthin Hair Gummies contain no biotin. Instead, two gummies provide astaxanthin (8 mg), pumpkin seed extract (100 mg), sea kelp (50 mg) and horsetail (30 mg), with zinc at 136% of the Daily Value and vitamin E. They are vegan.* Pair them with the GROW Prebiotic Scalp Mist for your scalp.

Always talk to your prescriber before adding any supplement while you're on a GLP-1 medication.

The bottom line

Hair shedding on GLP-1s is common, usually temporary and mostly about nutrition and fast weight loss. Eat enough protein, get your labs checked, be patient, and keep your prescriber in the loop. Want to know if what you're seeing is normal? Read hair shedding vs hair loss.
